What You Should Look for When You are Hiring a Wedding Photographer
There are numerous articles across the internet on what a couple should look for when hiring a wedding photographer. Here is a detailed one on The Knot for example. But just let me expand on that article and what I think you should really look for when researching !
1. What type of wedding does the photographer specialize in? Here at Jack’s we only do engagements, small intimate weddings, or elopements. That keeps the cost down for the client number one, and number two it allows us to really get some exceptional portraits of the couple. We also do a video of the wedding ceremony. We do not do really big weddings where you need a photographer for the whole day. We tell you that up front. A photographer that tells you they do “everything” might not be a good fit for you.
2. Look at the photographers reviews. If there are a lot of positive reviews, then you are probably going to get a good photographer.
3. Ask what equipment do they use? This is important not just for the quality of the images that you receive, but it is important that the images are backed up as the photos are taken. A photographer who uses a consumer/prosumer camera with one data card slot is taking a chance. It does not happen often, but data cards do go bad. And if the card is bad there go your pictures! Also, does the photographer, have a backup camera, backup flash, backup lighting, etc? For instance here at Jack’s we use top of the line professional Canon equipment. Our cameras have dual card slots. We have back cameras, flashes, lighting, etc. In fact we have so much stuff we have to use a cart to haul it all!
4. Price is important, but… The but is, just because you are paying a lot doesn’t mean you are going to get the best, and at the same time the lowest price doesn’t mean you are getting the best deal. Essentially, a photographer is charging you for 3 things; their time, their expertise, and the use of their equipment. For instance we charge a base rate of $150 for a one hour session. That’s about 20-25 great photos. And keep in mind that your photos have to be edited before they are delivered to you.
